Notes on Disk Space Requirements:
Allocate a larger backup hard disk than you think you will need
The most common backup problems are running out of space for your
backups.
In the white
information box just below “Select a drive to backup
or restore”
all the disk partitions present in the
system are displayed with there Used and Total space.
In this
particular example, there
are four drives from which one can chose to backup or restore.
Ensure that you
have enough disk space to backup the partitions you need.
You can not
backup a partition to the same partition
and should not backup a partition to another partition on the same disk.
Typically if you have 50GB of data you want to backup and anticipate
you will use another 50GB
of data over the course of the next year (100 GB of used disk space one
year from now)
then you should have at least 200GB of
free disk space on your backup hard disk to accomodate
full and incremental backups.
Free disk space and a pie chart diagram can be viewed by selection each
partition/disk.
Here, the pie chart represents the very small “DellUtility(*.\” partition.

Note on Partitions and Disks
A hard disk may contain one or more partitions
Partitions are designated by a Drive Letter such as C:\ or G:\
In this example, the Dell Utility *:\
partition is part of the same hard drive as the C:\ partition

The wizard asks if you want to continue even if
incremental backups cannot be created for unmounted partitions.
If you receive this window select
“Yes".
The wizard then prompts for the location where
the
backups will be stored.
Select
"Browse..."
Select a partition that you have not selected to be backed up.
In this example we are selecting the
Maxtor USB(G:) drive.
Select
"Make New Folder"
In the
Maxtor USB(G:) we are
going to create a new folder
and name it
“Backups_Norton9.0”.
This is
specific only to this
example, you can
select any name
for your backup location folder.
Once the folder is created click on it once so it
is
highlighted and select
"OK"
Your backup location will
appear in the field below “
Folder to
store backup images:”
This location will be your
specific
backup location.
Select "Next>"
Once we have created the location, we have to
schedule a
time for the backups.
To
automate the
backup process so we don’t miss a backup select
"Weekly" under
"Create Backups:"
Once you
select the weekly schedule, the display on the right side changes

Incremental backups are generally fairly quick but they will slow your
system.

Select
"Limit the number of backups
saved for each
drive".
For Maximum: number of backups select
1
This indicates one full backup will be maintained until the next full
backup completes.
Thus, you will need space for two full backups on your backup disk.
Notes on increasing the Maximum number of
backups
If you find that your backup hard disk is less than 40% full after a
week of backups
you may choose to increase this number. Selecting too large
a number will cause
your backups to fail due to lack of disk space |

"Next >>"
Select
“Create the first backup now”
Select
"Finish"
You can monitor the progress of your backup at the bottom of the window
where it says
